What Are The Side Effects Of Anabolic Steroids?
The side effects of taking anabolic steroids (AS) has been well studied and they all show conclusively that taking oral AS has a more severe side effects than taking the injectable steroids generally. The biggest problem when taking any steroid is the severe damage that it can cause to liver and kidneys.
Most of these studies that have been done over the years involve hospitalised patients who were treated for prolonged periods for quite a wide range of problems resulting from AS abuse. The problems range from anemia to renal insufficiency and impotence, but many studies have also found a dysfunction of the pituitary gland.
Specific studies that were done on AS to prove the extent of this damage have also proven that taking steroids will also result in decreased hepatic excretory function as well as intra hepatic cholestasis and hepatic peliosis. Hepatic peliosis is when a hemorrhagic cystic degeneration of the liver is seen.
The secondary problems that can be caused by this hepatic peliosis can lead to fibrosis and portal hypertension and any rupture of a cyst may be fatal with uncontrolled bleeding. If there is any good news about taking AS then it must be that injectable anabolic steroids have a less chance of causing this kind of damage.
Steroids like Testosterone cypionate and testosterone enanthate and others have shown very few adverse effects on the liver compared to the oral steroids available. An injectable like nortestosterone has also shown to cause lesions on the liver and eventually result in liver insufficiency.
Farther study over the years has identified the main culprit when it comes to liver damage being the 17-alpha-alkyl group which is the cause of tumours in the liver and the main cause of hepatocellular carcinoma in men. Without a doubt the biggest problem is most of these symptoms are asymptomatic until it is too late.
Peliosis hepatis as well as any liver tumours do not always show up in the normal blood analysis that is done by a doctor. The standard liver function test that a normal doctor would have done for you would more than likely not reveal these symptoms until the tumour can be seen which is often too late to give effective treatment. Many bodybuilders do what is called "stacking" where they use more than one type of AS at the same time.
It is abuse like this that has shown to cause a wide range of problems ranging from hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism to gynecomastia or "bitch tits" that is caused by an increase in the amount of circulating estrogens. All of these problems are irreversible and need surgery to correct.
